Visconti’s masterpiece The Leopard, based on the acclaimed novel by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, chronicles the fortunes of Prince Fabrizio Corbero, Prince of Salina (the Leopard) and his family during the unification of Italy in the 1860s. The film traces the waning of the aristocracy and the corresponding rise of a new class, exemplified by the enormously wealthy ex-peasant Don Calogero Sedara. The prince himself refuses to take active steps to halt the decline of his personal fortunes or to help build a new Sicily but his nephew Tancredi swims with the tide and assures his own position by marrying Don Calogero’s beautiful daughter Angelica. The closing section, an almost hour-long ball where Tancredi introduces Angelica to society, is often cited as one of the most spectacular sequences in film history.
