The film talks about the rustler Catlow(Yul Brynner)and his underlings bandits(Jeff Corey,Robert Logan,John Clark,Michael Delano) are pursued by the sheriff(Richard Crenna) and a bounty hunter gunslinger(Leonard Nimoy)with the aim to burgle the Mexican gold robbed of the Confederacy during the American civil war(1861-1865).They’ll confront the Apaches,the Mexican Army and cutthroats.
In the picture there’re action western,shootouts,comedy,tongue in cheek, and a little bit of moderated violence.The movie has the comic observations of the western parody genre originated in the late decade 60s by Burt Kennedy and Andrew McLagen and with references to the spaghetti western. Based on a Louis L’Amour novel is basically a humorist Western. The motion picture is filmed on Almeria(Spain),where during the 6os and early the 7os were shooting several spaghetti western .Thus appear usual Italian western secondary actors : Angel del Pozo,Julian Mateos,Jose Nieto,Victor Israel, among others. Yul Brynner plays perfectly as Catlow, interpretation similar to ¨Sabata¨(Frank Kramer) who’ll play later. Richard Crenna as the friend and enemy sheriff is very fine.Leonard Nimoy as the tough and cruel gunfighter is splendid. Excellent and lively music is by Roy Budd and nice cinematography by Edward Scaife. The movie is regularly directed by Sam Wanamaker. The film will appeal to humor-western enthusiastic and Yul Brynner fans. Rating :Mediocre but entertaining
