Charlie Anderson is a farmer in Shenandoah, Virginia and finds himself (and his family) in the middle of the Civil War. He decides not to get involved in the war because he believes that this is not “his” war. But he eventually has to get involved when his youngest boy is taken prisoner by the North.
Charley Anderson (James Stewart) is the widowed patriarch of a large family living on a farm in northern Virginia. Charley wants no part of the war for him and his family. However, the chance acquisition of a Confederate cap by Charley’s youngest son initiates a series of events which embroil Charlie and his family deeply into the death, suffering and loss from the bloodiest war in American history.
“Shenandoah” is a fine film, which could have been a great film had the hacks at Universal spent more money on it. I might even have forgiven the outrageous coincidence (involving the youngest son and his friend) which forms the turning point of the movie had the movie been crafted with a little more care and expense. Heck, the movie isn’t even made in a widescreen format. “Shenandoah” has the look of a made for TV movie, and the story and actors deserve more than that. Makeup, costuming and props are all clearly of a period later than the 1860s. Besides Stewart, performances are pretty routine, except for a couple of gem cameos from George Kennedy and James Best.
