The Exiles (1961)

This is wonderful news about a masterful documentary that was an early product of the independent film movement, but was almost lost to the ravages of neglect.
The Exiles chronicles the lives of three Native Americans who’ve left their homes on Southwestern reservations to live in Los Angeles. Filmmaker Kent Mackenzie worked closely for three years with Yvonne Williams, Homer Nish and Tommy Reynolds–his cast of three main characters– to document their experiences as urban exiles. Beautifully photographed by Erik Daarstad, Robert Kaufman and John Morrill, the black and white film reflects the poetry of their dreams and the gritty reality of their lives.
The Exiles won critical acclaim when it premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 1961, but never found a distributor and was never released theatrically. When Milestone Films acquired the rights, the classic doc was only available on worn out 16mm prints, and only shown for educational purposes.
Milestone handed over the original 35mm materials to UCLA Film Television Archive’s Ross Lipman for restoration. The restored film debuted at the 2008 Berlin Film Festival, and will make it’s US theatrical debut at NYC’s IFC Center on July 11. The DVD was released in December 2008. Put it on your list.
